Hydrogen
Hydrogen
probably won't replace gasoline as a primary transportation fuel. Spending
government money on hydrogen won't make it practical, only the free market
and the laws of physics can do that.If hydrogen does manage to replace gasoline as a primary transportation fuel, where the technology was developed will have little if anything to do with where the vehicles are ultimately built.
Here's a Wikipedia review of The Hype about Hydrogen.
And here's what Prof. Ulf Bossel says about the subject in Does a Hydrogen Economy Make Sense?:
"Fundamental laws of physics expose the weakness of a hydrogen economy. Hydrogen, the artificial energy carrier, can never compete with its own energy source, electricity, in a sustainable future."
"The discussion about a hydrogen economy is adding irritation to the energy debate. We need to focus our attention on sustainable energy solutions. ... It seems that by focusing attention on hydrogen we are missing the chance to meet the challenges of a sustainable energy future.
The title question "Does a hydrogen economy make sense?" must be answered with a definite "Never"."
