The Liberals
(4/18/08) I was asked about this one more time yesterday, so I'm just
going to put down my thoughts on it.The big fear with "the liberals", whatever one is exactly, is that they won't know when to stop and you won't be able to make them. We all want everyone taken care of, we all want everyone to have a place to live and enough to eat, we all want everyone to get quality medical care and a good education, we all want everyone to live in a completely clean, safe, secure world, but one person's right to those things is another person's obligation to provide them, and not everyone is comfortable with that obligation, or is even convinced that it can be met. It certainly cannot be met absolutely. Perfection could only be pursued, and the power by which the pursuit is animated increase, so that we must of necessity collectively agree to some measure of imperfection, else the only absolute we will achieve for our absolutely perfect world will be the absolute power to pursue it.
Why They Fight
(4/19/08) I had this same conversation, and I use the word loosely,
again earlier today, so I'm going to write down my thoughts on why they fight,
or why they think they do.They fight because they believe, some of them genuinely, that the Moslems will otherwise take over and/or destroy. Their. Entire. World. It is a notion of dire insidious abstract pervasive evil no less delusional than the cavalcade of such notions preceding, and no less real in its effects. They fight because they fight, and no other fight shall do but a grand fight, for grand reasons, wanting only a grand enemy, but then if John Wayne is a cowboy and George Bush Jr. a war hero, why then 19 men with box cutters are alike proper harbingers of the otherwise certain apocalypse. It is palpably absurd, plainly an illusion, real principally in consequence to its victims.
The Age of the Earth
(5/2/08) I was asked the age of the Earth by a voter yesterday, explicitly
as a litmus test. I recalled 4.5 billion years, he thought it was more like
6. We agreed there must be a fair bit of uncertainty over the precise point
of planetary formation, what with it being an accretion process and all.Though as a Congressman I would have no direct legislative control over the age of the Earth, this is a base I will gladly pander to.
4/21/08, 4th district
GOP convention, Greenville:
Republicans in the wild.
My persistent impression of the Republican convention, aside from the musical chairs, is that of gray haired men in suits swearing fealty to the enduring abortion god, as if by their chants to convince us of their faith.
Also, though I claim no great powers of discernment my impression is there may be more gay Republicans than Democrats. Which is kind of funny, considering. Maybe somebody should tell them. Not me, but maybe somebody.
Listen up, diehards. The agenda of the Republican party, besides acquiring more power of course, is keeping the rich rich. The business about abortion, gays, god, and guns is substantially hogwash. HOGWASH. HAW-AW-AW-AW- GWAAAAASH. The gun issue is mostly calculated influence peddling, the rest is some distance to outright con.
5/2/08, Clyburn Fish Fry, Columbia:
The Democrat has an elaborate social structure
Hopefully it doesn't come across as racist or pandering, or maybe racist pandering, but I think I actually prefer black people. They're friendlier, they smile more, they're more outgoing. They clearly dance better, for what it's worth. Not that there's anything wrong with white people. Some of my best friends are white. I'm white. But black people seem in general nicer. Not to stereotype.
But seriously. I was just at the Clyburn fish fry in downtown Columbia, and I was trying to imagine a time when that couldn't have happened because blacks and whites were separated by law, and it wasn't that long ago. What was the matter with people?
